LC83R Liquid Crystal Utilization Notes
|
|
Introduction |
|
| LC83R is a low viscosity solution of the popular 83°C liquid crystal
dissolved in solvent. The low viscosity, easy wetting solution automatically
produces the very thin coating that is optimum for hot spot detection. |
|
To apply LC83R |
|
| 1. | Open vial of LC83R. |
2. |
Wet tip of nylon liner brush with a drop of LC83R (or dip brush into vial). |
3. |
Close vial.
|
4. |
Touch tip of brush to surface of device under test. |
5. |
Wait 30 to 60 seconds for solvent to dissipate.
|
6. |
Examine device in a microscope under cross polarized conditions. Areas coated with liquid crystal will be colorful due to optical properties of liquid crystal. (This presumes temperature is less than 83°C.) Bare areas will be dark. |
7. |
If coverage is incomplete, retouch IC with brush. (Enough liquid crystal will remain on brush.) |
8. |
Return brush directly to storage tube. (No rinsing or cleaning is necessary.)
|
Note |
|
| A pleasant variation is to view the device through cross polarized
conditions as liquid crystal is applied. The image is nearly black, then blossoms
into color as the liquid spreads and evaporates across the surface.
